One of the things I love about thrifting is that you never really know what you're going to find.

Most visits end with nothing more than a quick walk through the aisles and a reminder to come back another day. But every once in a while, something catches your eye that simply doesn't belong.

During a visit to a local Goodwill store in Calgary, Alberta, an unmistakable flash of olive green and gold stood out among the toys. Although I didn't know exactly what it was and had never played any of the Halo games myself, I still recognized that it was not a typical find.

Sitting quietly on the shelf in the toy section above a rack of clothing was a Halo 3 Legendary Edition Master Chief Helmet complete with its original display stand.

The price?

$10.00 CAD.

Needless to say, I was not going to leave it behind.

More Than Just a Game Collectible

Released alongside Halo 3 in 2007, the Legendary Edition quickly became one of the most memorable collector's editions ever produced for a video game.

Instead of including a small statue or another art book, Microsoft packaged the game inside a detailed replica of Master Chief's iconic Mjolnir helmet mounted on a custom display base.

Although never intended to be wearable, the helmet became an instant favourite among Halo fans and collectors. Nearly two decades later, complete examples continue to be displayed proudly in game rooms and personal collections around the world.
